Serenity Shelter History
My favorite thing in the whole world is paddling my sea kayak. It just makes me happy being in my kayak and experiencing the surroundings. Fortunately, I happen to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Alaska has thousands of miles of shoreline to explore. Within an hour or two of Anchorage, there are launching spots to explore Prince William Sound, Resurrection Bay and The Kenai Fiords. So for more than 20 years I have been paddling around exploring these areas and being extremely happy.
There was only one small problem. As the area warmed up and became sunnier, we started experiencing many more no-see-ums and white sox (biting insects). They especially like to attack when you are setting up camp and cooking. I believe they are attracted to the heat of our bodies and cooking. My camping experience became compromised. I became irritable from all the annoyance and itching and I needed to come up with a solution.

The solution was the Serenity Shelter. I designed a prototype of this shelter in 1990. My friends and I then put it to the test. Modifications and improvements were made over several years time. I now have a perfect solution for a cozy camp. The Serenity Shelter repels rain, reduces wind, and, best of all, it keeps out the insects. It sets up to be a 10 by 10 foot shelter that is 6 feet high. Up to six campers are very comfortable cooking and eating in it. In a pinch, it is possible to squeeze in 10 friendly campers. Best of all, it is small and weighs just over 3 pounds, so it is easy to pack. I am now a very happy sea kayaker both on the water and in camp. I never go out sea kayaking without my now favorite piece of gear. Many of my friends do likewise. In Alaska the Serenity Shelter is the kitchen/dining room and another separate tent is used for sleeping. Because of the bears we need to keep cooking and eating separate. During trips to Baja, Mexico it was the only tent, used for sleeping at night and for shade during the day.
I have been making and selling the Serenity Shelter to other sea kayaker friends for 12 years. They have been in use by private parties, and on commercially guided sea kayak trips. Some have been used on arctic river raft and backpack trips. Some have been used for sea kayaking in Florida, Mexico and Scotland.
